Though popular all over the world,
credit cards, also called ‘plastic money’ are not preferred by many. One of the prime reasons why people shy away from credit cards is the flexibility of payment make them overspend. Then this is naturally followed by heavy debts that soon become difficult to manage. Once bitten, twice shy, such people completely avoid keeping credit cards – decision taken for life. Many new and young users have been warned by their parents on the dangers of irresponsible use of credit cards and thus refrain from using them.
Then there are a large section of people who literally do not leave home without it. These people are frequent users of their cards, which are usually from several banks, airlines, hotel chains and so on. They use these cards for buying any and everything or services and go on collecting the reward points that come with it. It is not uncommon to find such people who use multiple credit cards not paying their dues on time. This results in heavy debt accumulation and they are actually paying a very high rate of interest on their credit card dues.
So if you are new to the world of credit cards and thinking of getting one, here are some points to ponder before you acquire one.
• Since acquisition of
credit cards is very easy these days, you need to think of your sense of money management before you procure one. First of all, are you a responsible spender? Though every one confirms that they are aware of their expenditure patterns, ultimately their overspending lands them in deep trouble.
• If you have problems in managing your existing financial commitments, it is better not to go for any
credit card at this stage.
• However if you are a cautious and money-conscious person by nature and spend your money wisely only to buy things which are needed, pay your bills on time and every time and have managed to stay out of a debt situation for a long time, credit cards could be a convenient option for you.
• Sometimes using credit cards becomes a necessity when you are traveling, especially abroad. When you are going to another country, sometimes it is not possible to carry enough money to cover all your travel expenses like hotel, airfares, and other incidental expenses. In such situations, credit cards are an asset.
• If you are a big spender for buying essential high-valued items, using credit cards could earn you reward points, which can be used in future for more luxury products and services. Imagine having a credit card that gives you 2% back on the purchase value. So spending $1000 on a purchase could bring $20 as reward points.
